    Chhoti Bahen is the story about the delicate but powerful bond of love. Rajendra and Shekhar lose their parents, and the all they have is each other, and their younger sister Meena. Though in love, Rajendra swears that he will not marry till his younger brother and sister are settled. Shekhar falls in love with a rich girl Shobha. Meanwhile, Meena's marriage is fixed. Misfortune strikes when Meena meets with an accident and is blinded forever. Shekhar, pressed on by an impatient Shobha, marries her and they go away to live with her rich father. Rajendra loses his job. To support his poor blind sister, he is desperate for a job.

When Hemangini objects to Kishan's ill-treatment, Bipin takes the side of the rest of the family, and may probably force her to abandon Kishan to his fate or divorce her.

Regardless of this, Rajesh asks his parents to permit him to marry her, to which his mother agrees, but his father refuses. Then Mr. Rai, Amirchand's friend, intervenes, he offers to pay for getting Shivani's eyes tested, and if she succeeds in getting her sight, then and only then can Amirchand permit his son to marry her. An eye specialist is consulted, who concludes that the only way Shivani can see is through the eyes of a dead donor. The question remains how long will it take for a donor to come forward, and if nothing happens, will Rajesh consent to marry someone of his father's choice?

    Meena Khosla has an bicycle accident with fellow collegian Mahesh Kapoor, and after a few misunderstandings both fall in love with each other. They would like to get married, plan accordingly, and get intimate. When Mahesh's dad summons him home to get married, Mahesh initially refuses, but subsequently gives in, and gets married to Malti Rai. In the meantime, a pregnant Meena is thrown out of the house by her uncle and aunt, gives birth to baby boy, and abandons the child in a forest. The child is found by a kind-hearted devout Muslim, Abdul Rashid, who decides to adopt him, much to the charging of the Hindu and the Muslim communities. Abdul re-locates to the city, but is unable to shake the stigma of bringing up an illegitimate child, Roshan, who is subjected to all kinds of taunts by fellow classmates. Roshan then stops going to school, meets with Jaggu, a petty thief, who befriends him and introduces him to a life of crime. Then one day, the police arrest Roshan for theft, and bring him before a very disapproving judge - who is none other than his biological dad, Magistrate Mahesh Kapoor, who is all ready to impose a heavy jail sentence. Will the knowledge that his youth is his son change Mahesh's mind?

Then one day Amar intercepts some criminal activity, which results in two employees losing their jobs, with one ending up in prison. When the prison term gets over, he runs over Amar under his truck, killing him instantly. Devastated and heart-broken, Malti hides this news from Raja and tells him that Amar is hospitalized and unable to return home. Then the towns folks start linking her with Prakash, leading to rumors being spread about their intimacy, finally resulting in Prakash proposing to her and both getting married. This settled, the two hope that life will continue and wounds will heal. But Raja expects his dad to return home, starts hating Prakash - so much so he harbors thoughts of killing him. And then one day Raja gets hold of a gun - and this time he will make sure that he kills Prakash - who he blames for his parents' separation.

    Thakur (Prithviraj Kapoor) is a proud and dignified man with an only daughter, Chanda (Jayashree) who is of marriageable age. His wife (Mumtaz Begum) and he receive a suitable proposal from the house of a lawyer and his wife (Ulhas and Lalita Pawar respectively). They accept this proposal, and during this process, Thakur makes it clear to the lawyer that he is unable to afford any dowry, to which the lawyer agrees, thinking that Thakur is very wealthy and will give plenty to his daughter. This does not happen and the marriage is almost cancelled. The groom, Suraj, (Karan Dewan) accepts the bride without any dowry. The marriage proceeds and the party returns home. For days the couple are left alone together. Then Chanda's mother-in-law gets agitated over the lack of dowry and starts harassing Chanda. The lawyer dies suddenly during a court case, and Chanda is blamed for his death. Eventually Chanda is thrown out of the house, and Suraj is unable to do anything. At this point in time, Thakur decides to sell everything and give it all to Chanda's mother-in-law, who is now planning to get Suraj married again. But will this gesture resolve Chanda's problems?
